Michaela Ressl: On my own! "Completely on my own!" We have trained this. 1983 I had an accident. A bone got broken then. I wanted to run and a tram ran into me!
Gerda Ressl, mother: What is (important) for her to be accompanied. She can?t go anywhere on her own, since she doesn?t know, how to get back. She can?t walk in a direction she doesn?t know. Routes takes a long time of training and should be largely without disturbances, then she can walk them on her own.
Announcer: Since Michaela Ressl has a mobile phone, she feels safer. She likes going to the sheltered work, but dislikes the fact that they get hardly any orders any more.
Michaela Ressl: We used to have a lot of work, but now there is none. (Sighs) The companies have already moved abroad! "And for which things or products?" We sewed cleaning cloths together and hemmed them, but now we don?t do this anymore, unfortunately!
Announcer: The workshop is funded by the Vienna council. Miss Ressl gets an allowance, but she must pay for it much more than she earns, her mother explains:
Gerda Ressl, mother: We pay 30 percent of the allowance for nursing care, at her allowance level. It is proportionate: At every degree of disability, thirty percent is taken by the workshop. If somebody is on a higher allowance level, he pays more, on a lower less. But the workshop always gets 30 percent of the allowance for nursing care.
She also receives an ongoing allowance, a kind of social welfare, out of which everything she needs must be paid.
Announcer: They also provide lunch there, it is not as good as at home, Michaela Ressl says, and there have been some changes here as well.
Michaela Ressl: We used to cook in the kittchen, but now they abolished it. Usually we take it from the menu and when we have all-kinds, we choose.
Announcer: After work she also tries to do at least part of the housework herself.
Michaela Ressl: When I come home after work, I rest. An when mum has washed the dishes, I put it out and in the machine. This is part of housework.
