.Assistance in Austria
Announcer: Peter has not been on holiday for the last 5 years. This year, after his mother?s death ? he will fly to Germany to see his cousin for 17 days. In November he will attend a congress in Germany.
When he has to go somewhere, he sometimes goes by wheelchair. He only uses public transport, when the stops are favourably positioned. In front of Peter?s door, a tram with low level entrance/ niederflurstrassenbahn stops. Sometimes he takes it.
Peter Singer: Primarily I go by special transport, but, like today, I have an executive board meeting, where I can go along on my wheelchair and after the meeting somebody brings me to the tram.
Some time ago I was in Italy with my parents. The last five years I have not been away and now I am heading for a holiday in Germany for 17 days, I?ll fly there and at that all on my own.
Moderation: Michaela Ressl is over 40 and lives with her parents. She can hardly imagine living her life anywhere else.
Michaela Ressl: My parents always take care of me. Then I feel fine!
Announcer: Michaela Ressl lives in a big flat in the attic. She lives on the top floor. Together with her mother she was welcoming my colleague and me at the door.
OT: "Hallo Gerhard!" "Hallo!" "Hi there!" "Good morning. My name is Irmgard!" "Yes, I know!" "Michi, you take a lead!" "Where can we sit?" "Wherever you want. This is Michi?s room!" "Michi, where do you want us to sit?" "I don?t care!
I got a big room from my brother. He already moved out."
Announcer: In her room there are cups and awards on the wall. Michaela Ressl had participated in the Special Olympics earlier on and won a lot:
Michaela Ressl: My medals. 16! "Where did you win those medals?" In skiing, in bowling! I got two in bowling!
Announcer: Michaela Ressl goes to work every morning, this is of importance to her. In other respects, too, her day starts like everybody else?s.
Michaela Ressl: I get up at 7, get dressed, have breakfast, brush my teeth, put my stuff into my bag and then, at half past seven, leave the house, go three stops by tram J and, if no 10A bus comes, I walk a little.
It doesn?t go without saying that Frau Ressl walks these roads on her own. She doesn?t like walking on her own, since she ran into a tram once. But when she walks on her own, she is very proud.
