Magazine Program: Move Barriers

von Gerhard Wagner

In the year 2003 at the University of Vienna there were 930 legally blind students, 620 students with physical handicaps and 350 students with hearing problems. (O-Tone Screen Reader)

Speaker Corinna Zeiser: The main problem students with physical handicaps have, is most lecture halls or places at the University of Vienna are not accessible. The main reason for this is that parts of these buildings are protected as historical landmarks. This makes changing the buildings difficult. There is discussion of a ramp for wheelchairs at the main entrance to the university, but it?s doubtful that anything will actually take place.
On the theme of construction problem for the physically handicapped students comments Ms. Kornelia Götzinger on the responsibility to the handicap of the University of Vienna.

OT Kornelia Götzinger: ?We have now, for example in Astronomy building, I think, a request, that it be changed and that will begin first in 2007 and then in 2015 finished and those responsible can?t tell me if the remodeled building will be accessible to the handicap.?

Speaker: A further problem is that blind students can?t call up the University homepage because they can?t login. These students can?t register for classes nor exams. Many institutes have their own Internet pages for lectures and registering for exams. Korelia Götzinger knows, that a solution has been worked on recently.

:O-Tone Kornelia: Software is always changing, but it is obvious that the main University of Vienna homepage was programmed with the blind in mind. For this reason blind people do not find the various names and hints like Courses of Study. And similarly now most institutes have developed their own Homepage and for this reason they also didn?t consider blind students. And its now so, that the individual institutes can only be seen by those who can see. But blind students have problems to get into these Homepages and then to register for exams using the internet is even harder. In addition switch E-Learning for many classes, which are also not accessible so they are not available for the blind.
